ScaDS.AI Girls' Day 2025
Today, nothing works without computer science, as computers and the internet have become an integral part of our everyday lives. On Girl's Day, we want to give you an insight into the day-to-day life of a data science researcher and show that computer science is wrongly labelled as a male domain.
- On this day, you will meet researchers from our centre and take your first steps towards becoming a data scientist.
- In our AI workshop you will learn how to use language models such as ChatGPT and how to ask the right questions (prompts) to get the right answers.
- As well as programming, you will have the opportunity to apply your new skills and analyse climate data together.
- Join us in our Living Lab and get an exciting and lively insight into the different research projects at our centre.
But what exactly is data science and what do we do as a research centre?
Due to the constant use of the Internet, more and more data is being generated, the content of which can sometimes no longer be processed manually, i.e. without the help of computers, due to the large volume and unmanageable quantity. This phenomenon is known as big data. Collecting and storing data is not necessarily a bad thing. For example, collecting and analysing lots of data about our changing environment or our health can help with climate change or medicine. But the internet also collects a lot of data about us humans and our usage and consumer behaviour. Have you ever bought a jacket from an online shop and noticed that the jacket started showing up more and more as an advertisement on different sites on the internet? This was personalised advertising and is a very typical example of collecting and storing your data for profit.
At our research centre ScaDS.AI, we focus on the efficient use and analysis of big data using new AI methods. This particular branch of computer science research is known as data science. We are also researching how to prevent the misuse of personal data, for example through personalised advertising, and how to better protect users' privacy.
And what exactly is AI?
Artificial intelligence is on everyone's lips thanks to ChatGPT. Perhaps you've even chatted with an AI yourself? At ScaDS.AI, we deal with what is behind or rather in models like ChatGPT, develop such models ourselves and research them. In doing so, we program computer codes, so-called algorithms, which can solve problems independently and develop further. We also ask how the artificial intelligence used makes decisions and learns. By explaining the decisions of artificial intelligence and methods for protecting privacy, we want to strengthen trust in the use of such data science applications.
We look forward to your registrations and an exciting day!
